the presidential election and four days removed from hurricane sandy, one of the worst storms ever to hit this country. the death toll now stands at 94. there are still 4.6 million homes and businesses without power. and the new estimate for economic damage to say nothing of all the property damage is $50 billion. "the new york times" reporting the storm could shave half a percentage point off the country's gdp. for most of the northeast, it's now a recovery mission. and yesterday california military planes were loaded with utility vehicles ready to be shipped into new york. an army of some 50,000 utility workers from across the country, even canada, being deployed to the region to help in the massive project to restore power which will take weeks. three navy warships are anchored off the northeast coast to help with the relief effort. in new jersey, military trucks are being deployed to operate as polling places on election day in the hardest-hit communities still remain without power. now, the good news does trickle out slowly. today amtrak will begin offering limited service between ne

, joe. 11 days since sandy struck, and now new york city and surrounding areas are now having gas rations. every other day you can get gas depending on the last digit of your license plate. this is because of supply and distribution issues. the power is going back on in a lot of those gas stations, but these lines continue. just to give you an example in brooklyn where i live, at 2:00 a.m. when i come to work, it was still a two-hour-long line. people sitting there with gas cans waiting to get it. it's incredible that it continues now almost two weeks since sandy struck. gas rationing because of shortages in new york city. this morning temperatures continue to be very cold on the heels of that nor'easter. the snow is still on the ground. bundle up. windchills in the 20s in new england. even down to the 30s all the way down to washington, d.c. so this is it, though. we're going to start to warm it up in this region of the country. we desperately need it. it's been rough out there. it's going to be in the 50s today instead of the 40s. we should melt a lot of that snow. as we go thro

to survive hurricane sandy and was picked out in new jersey and had to tie it up quickly right before the storm hit to protect it from the storm because they didn't want to have to pick out a new tree. it survived, of course, sitting here and it'll be later on this evening. we had a messy day yesterday. wasn't pretty, the airports had problems too. now as we go throughout the day it's cold in the wake of the norm. for the tree lighting it will be chilly. windchill, 32 and we will see the temperature itself somewhere right around 39. as far as the roads go after that little snow and rain yesterday, secondary roads could have a minor issue but later no problems at the airports. no travel issues whatsoever, we'll see highs in the 40s all through the northeast. rest of the country looks chilly. windchills cool seeing them around the rest of the nation especially in the midwest in the teens. even texas a little cold but the big weather story over the next three days if you are traveling to the west coast, you're not going to see typical west coast weather. it is going to be very cold over

four days, but i did stumble across this video from superstorm sandy, one of the most epic videos i've seen of the storm surge and the waves crashing there. this was union beach, new jersey, a 15-year-old stayed in his house and took these pictures right as high tide approached. and you can see, this is about three hours before that water even peaked at its height. that's why the jersey shore got devastated. let me show you what's going on on this monday morning. winter gear for many across the country. the coldest morning by far from west to east. new england's a very chilly morning just like it's been all weekend. we are seeing a little bit of snow out there coming off of lake ontario, oswego down to syracuse. a little snow on the new york state throughway. that's about it, though. you want to talk about cold. look at the northern plains. now in the negative windchills from minneapolis to fargo. that cold air is heading for chicago as we go throughout the day today. also, the other side of this. still a little bit of warmth left in the deep south. we could see the threat of some s
